nce upon a time in the far away kingdom of Long Island, there lived a lady named Janet. She married this guy named Larry. Janet loved the theater, but loved her life as a teacher (and Larry) much more so she became very active in the local theater community. Then they had a little bundle of joy…ME!
My very first memories of life are running around with a paint brush full of water while my mother painted sets. I think I was wearing Osh Kosh B Gosh overalls…it was the late 80’s, forgive me! The birth of my baby brother perfectly coincided with my first on stage experience in the local production of Annie when I was 9. Well, I was bitten and continued with that theater for about the next decade.
In high school, I played the flute, cello and I even tried the saxophone but that didn’t go over very well. I was the lead in all the school plays and when that got boring I headed right over to the performing arts high school. You didn’t know there was one on good ol’ Long Island did you. I had the great luck of being able to learn from a couple of Broadway veterans. I hung on their every word as they told stories of working with Jerome Robbins, Gwen Verdon, Natalie Wood and so on.
They really got me excited so I packed up and went to the even farther away kingdom called New York. Yup, I went to college a whole 35 miles from my hometown in a little modest school called New York University. Did I mention I was also a smart kid in high school? Oh, I was. So, I toe tapped my way into the music building, got slammed in the head with music theory, theatre history, and a rock solid vocal technique. I got to do a whole bunch of fun shows while I was there including the first workshop of Like You Like It.
After college I got a dingy apartment in the corner of Manhattan and an even dingier job. But not to worry! Just a few months later I started working for real and then I became a real princess!
